GUIDANCE FOR CONTRIBUTORS TO LITHOSPHERE

Introduction

Lithosphere is a journal designed for publication of original papers and brief reports in many fields of the Earth's sciences, firstly those describing important discoveries in studying the Earth's interior, as well as review articles, discussions, chonicle of important events in geological life and other information (defended theses, conference reports, etc). Lithosphere is issued twice a year. Articles in English, Russian and Belarussian are accepted for publication.

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be sent to the following address:

Executive Secretary of Lithosphere

All articles will be subject to review for interest and scientific soundness. When necessary the manuscript may be returned to the author for reworking or further clarification. As a rule, page proofs will not be supplied to authors. Text for an article and copies of illustrations may be submitted to the Lithosphere by any convenient means. The Editorial Board can't guarantee that the article will be accepted for publication or printed on a particular date or issue of Lithosphere. The journal assumes no responsibility for statements made by contributors.

Manuscripts

Generally, the size of the manuscript should not exceed 15 typed pages (tables, illustrations, references and abstracts included); short communications, review articles and chronicle should not exceed 3 typed pages double-spaced. Two copies of the manuscript should be provided in typing on the A4 (or similar format) pages of white paper. Each paper should be provided with a Summary.

The abstract up to 1 page reporting concisely the purposes and results of the paper should be attached for the translation into two other languages (Russian and Belarussian). The translation into these languages will be provided by the Lithosphere staffonly for those not familiar with Russian/Belarussian. For authors not fluent in English and prepared the manuscript in English it is advised to submit a copy of the paper in Russian (Belarussian) too.

After the title of the paper, the name(s) and surname(s) of author(s), the name(s) of the institution(s) where the author(s) work(s), the complete postal and E-mail addresses of the author(s) the main text should be given. Please use metric units everywhere.

All joint communications must indicate the names and surnames of all authors with their complete postal and E-mail addresses, phone(s) and fax numbers.

Papers are also submitted on a 3.5" diskette formated for IBM-compatille computers or CD-R. Texts should be prepared using MS Word 97 and up processor. The file on a floppy disk should correspond exactly to the hard copy. Please write in the diskette label the file(s) name(s).

Illustrations

Two copies of illustrations (no more than 6) should be typed on separate sheets of paper attached to the manuscript. Illustrations and photographs with legends to them printed in the Lithosphere will not exceed 12.5 x 21 cm, or 12.5 x 6 cm. The figures should allow their reduction without loosing small detailes.

Photographs are accepted on a white non-glossy paper. Each illustration must be clearty numbered with soft pensil and name(s) of author(s) should be written down on the back.Original should not be greater than A4 size.

Illustrations previously published and unchanged from the original must be accompanied by permission from the original publisher to republish. This is the responsibility of the author, not Lithosphere.

Captions to figures must be typed on a separate sheet and attached to the manuscript. Do not place captions on any illustrations. Black and white photographs of good quality should permit their reduction in size too. It is advised to submit all figure also in a diskette as separate files in compressed form. The JPG, TIFF (in some cases PostScript) formats are recommended to use.

Tables

Tables with text only and without graphics may be placed by the author within the text of the article for typesetting by Lithosphere staff. Alternatively, you may send as the tables as separate files on diskette. In this case please indicate which software package did you use.

References

References should be given at the appropriate places in the text in parentheses (author(s) name(s) and the year of publication). The reference list should be prepared in alphabetic order at the end of the paper. Typically, references for unpablished data should not appear in the reference list, but it is allowed to give references as "Personal communication" with the name of the author. The list should contain name(s) and initials of author(s) and the title of the paper or a monograph.

For books there should follow the name(s) of editors(s), the name of publisher, the town and the year of publication and the number of pages

(e.g.: Stuart A.J. Pleistocene vertebrates in the British Isles. London and New York, 1981, 211 p.).

For papers there should follow the name(s) of author(s), the title, the year, volume and number of the journal, the initial and final page numbers for the cited article
(e.g.: Irvine T.N., Baragar W.R.A. A guide to the chemical classification of the common volcanic rocks // Canad. J. Earth Sci., 1971. Vol. 8, No.5. P. 523-547).

For maps use the following
(e.g.: Harrison J.E., Griggs A.B., and Wall J.D. Geologic and structure maps of the Wallace 1-degree x 2-degree quadrangle, Montana and Idaho: U. S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-1509-A, scale 1:25.000, 1986.

Acknowledgements may be included in a brief statement at the end of the article.
